Celtic Manor – The Manor House

There are
three hotels at The Celtic Manor Resort. Guests can choose to stay in
the luxurious five star Resort Hotel, the four star 19th century Manor
House or the Newbridge on Usk, which is located only a stone's throw away from
the Resort itself. Each hotel has its own style and atmosphere. The costs for
this tour are based on the 4 star Manor House
Play 1 round at Celtic Manor Twenty Ten Course – venue
for the 2010 Ryder Cup
Celtic Manor Twenty Ten Course

Built to
stage The Ryder Cup in 2010, the course opened for play in July
2007. The first course to be built specifically for golf's greatest team
tournament, it measures a robust 7,493 yards off the back tees and has a par of
71. With water hazards on half of its holes, the course has six signature
holes and presents many more memorable tests and risk-and-reward dilemmas. One
of the features of the spectacular new course is its variety with many of the
earlier holes having a links-like feel with some long rough and greenside
swales, before the middle section of the course reveals the full extent of the
lake-lined challenge.
A tough finishing
stretch culminates in a real sting in the tail at the 18th.
Play 1 round at Royal Porthcawl (50 minute drive from
Celtic Manor)

Royal Porthcawl
was described as being one of the twelve finest courses in the world by the
late Tom Scott, a leading writer on golf and former editor of Golf Illustrated.
Since his day the club has acquired a large practice area and further
improvements have been made to the course, developments which keep Royal
Porthcawl firmly among the world's top golf courses. The status of the course
is sustained by the many prestigious professional and amateur events held at
the club over the years. ichael Williams, writer, of the Daily Telegraph summed
it all up with; "Royal Porthcawl epitomises all that is best about the
game, as it once was, even down to a creaking clubhouse that is as unchanging
as the magnificent links and unrivalled hospitality."
Early check out of
Celtic Manor and travel north to Formby,
Merseyside where your group will
stay for the next 4 nights at Formby
Hall Resort
Driving time from
Celtic Manor to Formby Hall is around 3 ½ to 4 hours.
Formby Hall

Formby Hall Golf
Resort & Spa opened in 1996 and is one of the newest courses on
England's Golf Coast but has already built an enviable reputation. The golf
club has been transformed into a hotel following an extensive £10million
development that has repositioned this former golf club into a complete
residential golf resort destination. This is a 62 bed roomed 4 star hotel with
an 18 hole course, a superb 9 hole par 3 course, a new driving range and a
unique new PGA Residential Academy together with a superb Leisure & Fitness
club and Spa destination.
Play a mid afternoon round at Formby Golf Links

Formby Golf Club
is one of the classic courses of the Lancashire coastline. Although somewhat
protected from the elements by pine trees that line several of the holes, the
course is a tough one, particularly when the wind does break through. Such is
the profusion of wildlife and plants at Formby that it has been declared a Site
of Special Scientific Interest with the magnificent, fragile dunes a designated
conservation area. Formby Golf Club are proud to have an outstanding amateur
championship course with par 3s amongst the most challenging to be found
anywhere. Formby has hosted many important national and regional amateur golf
events, particularly three Amateur Championships. It was on this course that
Jose-Maria Olazabal beat Colin Montgomerie to win the final of The Amateur
Championship in 1984.
Play 1 round at Royal Birkdale Open Championship Links (Image
on following page)
Royal Birkdale
hosted the 2008 Open! Among the many great courses along the Northwest coast,
Royal Birkdale stands out as a perfect example of links golf. It is currently
the number one course in England and has been voted the number one in Britain,
most recently in the survey published in
1998 after The
Open. The course has been the stage for many great golf championships including
the Walker Cup, the Curtis Cup and the Ryder Cup. On eight occasions the
greatest championship, The Open, has been played here and in 2005 the club was
the venue for The Amateur Championship, for the third time.

The links measure
6,690 yards and although the distance itself is a test even for the most
accomplished golfer, the wind, whistling down the fairways when it comes from
the sea, adds to the challenge. Each hole runs through a landscape of high
dunes, the fairways are flat and fair and from the tee there is generally a
clear view of the task ahead. Each hole is memorable, from The Open
Championship tee the 13th measure 498 yards, one of the longest par 4s in
championship golf. Visitors to the course can walk in the footsteps of many of
golf's legends, among them Open Winners, Peter Thomson, a double winner at
Royal Birkdale, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller and Tom Watson. On
the 15th hole, a plaque commemorates Arnold Palmer's great shot in appealing
weather conditions, on the way to his Open win 1961.
Play 1 round at Royal Lytham & St Anne’s Open
Championship Links

Nestling between
two busy seaside resorts, the Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s Golf Course is one of
the most unique courses in the rotation of the British Open. It is a links in
every sense of the word, with sandy soil and the wind blowing in from the Irish
Sea. Open to the elements, the trees on the course permanently lean sideways,
with the wind often proving a formidable competitor in the homeward five holes
of the course. Unusually, the course is set amongst a Victorian housing estate,
and occupies a limited piece of land, with red-brick houses in plain view.
Located nearby is the St. Anne’s train station with the railway line running
adjacent to the first nine holes of the course. The course is well designed, with holes to test every level of
player. It opens with a Par 3, the only major championship course to do so. The
first four holes and last five are said to be
amongst the
trickiest in Britain, but some respite is offered in between with holes which
are within everyone can hope to emulate Seve Ballesteros' five birdies and am
eagle in this stretch on his way to winning the 1979 Open
Play 1 round at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) Open Championship
Links

The ancient links
of the Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake, site of the first British Amateur
championship, was thankfully been added back on to the Open Championship
rotation in 2006, a fact that made some of the pros a bit squeamish! It has
been left out of staging the tournament since Roberto deVicenzo’s popular 1967
victory, and since then they have not had to face its controversial challenges
such as the out-of-bounds practice area just right of the 1st and 16th
fairways, the blind tee shot on the 5th, and the old-fashioned, undulating
fairways. You can feel the past here, both out on the links and inside the
clubhouse, one of the most famous in England, housing some terrific Bobby
Jones’ memorabilia with much of it commemorating his Open Championship win at
Royal Liverpool during his Grand Slam year of 1930. No education of links golf
is complete without a visit to Hoylake!
